One of the most popular treks in the Indian Himalayan region, the Kuari Pass trek attracts
thousands of explorers from all over the world every year. The route to Kuari Pass was once
traversed by Lord Curzon in 1905, and hence, it is often referred to as the Lord Curzon Trail.

The trek passes through dense alpine forests of oak, conifer, rhododendron, and birch, teeming with diverse wildlife. You may even come across leopard pugmarks or a Himalayan black bear along the trail. The Kuari Pass trek offers an adventurous journey with steep ascents and
descents, narrow and tricky paths, and gushing streams. However, the effort is truly rewarding as you capture breathtaking views of the silver horizon stretching parallel to the spotless blue sky.

The trek starts from SeluBagar, which is accessible by road from Ghat. From SeluBagar, the trail
leads to Ghunni—a short trek of approximately 2–3 hours. As the journey continues, you will traverse a landscape rich in alpine trees and wildflowers, passing through Ramni, a small village
inhabited by a vibrant Himalayan tribe. The trek then becomes more strenuous, with a steep climb to Jhinjhi village en route to Vinayak Pass.
From Ghunni to Jhinjhi, the trail crosses an open meadow offering stunning views of the
Himalayan giants, including Nanda Ghunti and Chaukhamba. The journey then takes you
through beautiful rhododendron forests and pasturelands where sheep and cattle graze near
nomadic huts. From Jhinjhi, the trail follows the Birahi Ganga River to Pana village before heading towards Kuari Pass via Dakhwani. This section of the trek is a mesmerizing blend of dense forests, flowing streams, varied landscapes, and fascinating wildlife.

The descent from Kuari Pass leads to Tali and eventually to Joshimath via Auli, concluding an unforgettable trekking experience.

  • Summer (April–mid-June): The best season for Kuari Pass trekking, with pleasant weather and temperatures ranging between 19°C to 29°C. Light woolens are advised.
  • Monsoon: Not recommended due to muddy and slippery trails.
  • Spring (mid-September–early November): A great time for trekking, with lush greenery and
    calm weather.
  • Winter: The trek becomes challenging due to heavy snowfall. Temperatures range from -8°C to 12°C, so warm clothing is essential.
Kuari Pass is located within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve at an altitude of 4,265 meters (12,200 feet) above sea level in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is a major trekking destination in Garhwal, offering spectacular views of the Rishi Gorge, once deemed impenetrable. Camping sites such as Gulling, Chitrakantha, and Tali are major highlights of this trek. The final stretch from Tali Top to Kuari Pass provides an exhilarating experience, resembling a full alpine expedition with snow-covered trails. For first-time trekkers, the Kuari Pass trek is an enthralling adventure involving rock climbing, dense forest trails, and snow-laden paths.
